DENVER, CO – The Colorado Chapter of the Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) celebrated Health IT Advocacy Day at the Capitol Building today. The event brought together over 200 health IT professionals from across the state to speak with legislators and members of the Governor’s Cabinet about how technology can be used to improve the health of Coloradans.

Senator Irene Aguilar delivered the opening remarks in the Capitol Building’s Old Supreme Court Chambers.

While delivering the event’s opening remarks, Senator Irene Aguilar, a physician and a board member of Denver Health, expressed optimism about the potential for advances in healthcare technology to solve some of Colorado’s current access issues.

“As a provider and as a member of the Health Committee, an area of focus for me has always been how do we increase access to care in our rural areas,” said Senator Aguilar. “As you know, we probably have enough providers in this state, but they’re not all placed where they need to be.”

Carol Robinson of Cedarbridge Group moderated the panel on eHealth outcomes.

Senator Aguilar shared her hope that telemedicine technology would enable clinicians in metropolitan areas like Denver to treat patients in rural areas like Limon. Her sentiments were echoed by Representatives Perry Buck and Joann Ginal, who also addressed the attendees of the Health IT Advocacy Day celebration.

The daylong event featured panels on eHealth innovations and healthcare cybersecurity, as well as a discussion with members of the Senate and House Health Committee. Today marked the seventh annual celebration of Health IT Advocacy Day by the Colorado chapter of HIMSS, which counts over 1,100 health IT professionals among its members.
