Two Digital Health Startups Win the 2015 Denver Challenge Cup

Two Colorado digital health startup companies, Prima-Temp and NextStep.io, won the 2015 Denver Challenge Cup held at The Commons on Champa on November 24, 2015. Global incubator and venture fund 1776 that is dedicated to discovering “the most promising, highly scalable startups that are poised to solve the major challenges of our time” hosted the event.

These two strartups now move up to a Regional Challenge Cup and those winners will move to the Global Finals to be held in Washington, D.C. on June 2016. There they will “compete for over $1 million in prizes, as well as spend time with the investors, customers, media and other key connections that can help them succeed on a global scale.”

Dr. Lauren Costantini, PhD, CEO of Prima-Temp, pitched Priya, a groundbreaking fertility sensor. As described by PR Newswire,

“Priya is a discreet, wireless sensor that continuously and passively tracks a woman’s core body temperature, detecting the subtle changes that occur before ovulation, and then sends an alert to the Priya app on her smartphone when she is most fertile.”

Dr. Constantini recently presented initial research results with Priya at the ASRM reproductive medicine conference in Baltimore, MD. The study revealed the “potential for Priya to predict a woman’s fertile window 2 days prior to ovulation, based on a pre-ovulatory decline in body temperature than can only be detected via circadian rhythm monitoring with a continuous, core temperature sensor such as Priya.”

Dr. Constantini observed:

“Priya’s ability to collect continuous, core body temperature allows it to be both effortless and precise. Our rigorous scientific and clinical data show the capability of Priya to bring valuable information about a woman’s cycle right to her smartphone.”

John Schnipkoweit, CEO/Co-Founder NextStep.io, pitched their fitness activity integration app that “supercharges” your fitness devices for better health. According to NextStep.io, the software platform allows the user to:

  1. Sync up your performance data from many different activity trackers.
  2. Share and discuss your activity 1 on 1 with a health coach.
  3. Maximize your time with tailor made goals that fit your abilities and increase your success.

NextStep.io organizes the data from different devices such as Fuelband, FitBit and others to “identify habits and improve outcomes by connecting an individual to personal trainers, wellness coaches and groups.”

User engagement is enhanced by the systems ability to reveal personalized trends and the individual’s progress to health goals. NextStep.io believes the combination of “fitness activity tracking devices and apps” offers “tremendous potential to change the way people live.”
